You know how something’s just stick with you? You continue to think of them hours, days, weeks and years later at the oddest times. That very thing is happening to me.
As a leader of the MIM team in Elk Grove, I always try to come up with some little thing for moms to say about themselves at the beginning of our workouts..in addition to their names. It gives us a chance to get to know each other just a little better. A little over a week ago, instead of "favorite color, kids names" we did "how, if at all, are you connected to our philanthropy?" Our team is supporting the Leukemia and lymphoma society and the be the match registry this season. Many members had shared their personal connections and stories with me...I'd hoped it would give them the chance to let others know how personal this philanthropy is.
What followed, still makes the hair stand up on my arms, and was very touching. Each person said something heart felt, one had a child (now a 36yr old survivor) diagnosed at 18 months, another has a friend with a newly diagnosed daughter, some had no personal connection but expressed their interest in helping, several had family members who'd not survived and still another had just attended a funeral the day before in honor of someone who'd battled the disease.
The philanthropy part of MIM has always touched me, but this was one of those "defining moments" if you will. Not a dry eye in the place, we all felt closer as a team, as women and moms. Just a little effort on each person’s part can make such a dramatic difference in a cause.
Keep movin mamas. Moving forward, and making mountains move.
